BFI America held a charity event in Los Angeles in honour of director Guillermo del Toro, who has been appointed as the new BFI Fellow. The event was dedicated to supporting the BFI National Archive, one of the world’s most significant film and television collections.
Guillermo del Toro pledged to donate a third of his personal archive to the BFI. Individual and corporate donations were also made during the event. These will support the BFI Film on Film Festival, which will take place at BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX London in June 2027 and beyond.
The BFI Film on Film Festival, launched in 2023, showcases rare and well-known films from the BFI National Archive collection. What sets it apart is that all films are screened from film reels. The festival is also the only one in the UK where nitrate film can be projected.
In May 2026, Guillermo del Toro was awarded a BFI Fellowship in London. Next year, he will serve as a guest curator for the Film on Film Festival and select a film from the archive for the programme.
