BFI Southbank is marking the 50th anniversary of the Undercroft Skate Space with a special film programme, PUSH PLAY, which will take place from 19 to 21 June.
The online programme will be available to BFI Player subscribers across the UK from 4 June.
The Undercroft is regarded as the birthplace of British skateboarding and one of the oldest continuously used skate spaces in the UK. Over the past 50 years, it has been home to five generations of skaters.
PUSH PLAY explores the connection between skateboarding and cinema. The programme includes:
- a conversation with Oscar-winning director and skate filmmaker Spike Jonze, who will join us from New York;
- a meeting with skateboarder, artist, model and founder of the fashion brand Thames, Blondey McCoy;
- the UK premiere of the film OLLIE (2024), directed by Antoine Besse;
- a screening of MID90S (2018), Jonah Hill’s directorial debut;
- the Skate Shorts programme and a discussion with representatives of the contemporary skateboarding scene.
PUSH PLAY will be the closing event of the Skate 50 exhibition, dedicated to the history of the Undercroft and the communities that have formed around it over the past 50 years. The programme will also take place as part of the international Go Skateboarding Day on 21 June.
