The more consequential UK technology story this year is no longer which model performs best on a benchmark. It is who is building the compute to run these systems at scale, who is writing the rules for using them, and who is being allowed to test them on a public road. All three are moving at once, and the headlines covering each rarely mention the other two.

The 2026 Booker Prize longlist was announced on 28 July: thirteen novels, chosen by a panel chaired by the classicist Mary Beard and rounded out by the poet Raymond Antrobus, the musician and writer Jarvis Cocker, the writer and editor Rebecca Liu and the author Patricia Lockwood. The shortlist follows at the Southbank Centre in London on 22 September, and the winner — who takes £50,000 — will be named at Old Billingsgate on 9 November.

The Royal Society will name the winners of its 2026 Athena Prize on 31 August. The award, given every two years, does not go to an individual for a single discovery. It goes to teams within UK academic and research communities judged to have contributed most to advancing diversity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Winning teams receive a medal and a gift of £5,000.

On 6 August 2026 the UK government expanded the Global Talent visa's endorsed funder pathway — until now used mostly by universities and research institutes — to more than 100 research-intensive businesses. The change lets those companies bring in international researchers directly, without the individual needing to secure a separate endorsement of their own.
