UK start-ups and scale-ups raised a combined $17 billion in the first half of 2026, according to analysis from HSBC Innovation Banking UK and Dealroom — the strongest first half since 2022, and a rise of 102% on the $8.4 billion recorded in the same period of 2025. The headline number is the least interesting part of the report.
AI companies took $12.6 billion of that total: almost three quarters of all UK venture capital in six months, and more than the previous record for a full year. AI start-ups accounted for 19 of the 28 UK rounds worth over $100 million, and for all four deals above $1 billion. The UK attracted 39% of all European venture capital over the period and raised more than the next three largest European markets combined.
Those two facts sit awkwardly together, and the tension is the story. On one measure the UK has decisively won the European funding argument. On another, it has concentrated an unusual share of its risk capital behind a single thesis in a single half-year.
What this changes for founders
For anyone weighing the UK against another base, the practical takeaway is no longer “can we raise here”. At $17 billion and 39% of the continent's total, that question is answered. The interesting risk has moved: when this much capital chases a relatively narrow set of theses, the binding constraint stops being access to money and becomes differentiation. A company that would have been fundable on the strength of the category in 2023 now has to be fundable against five well-capitalised peers pursuing the same idea — several of which may have closed a nine-figure round in the last six months.
For founders outside AI, the same figures read as a different kind of signal. Roughly a quarter of a record pool is still a larger absolute number than the whole market offered two years ago, and it is being competed for by markedly fewer companies. Scarcity of attention cuts both ways.
The number worth watching next
The one to follow is not the next half-year total but the follow-on rate: how many of the companies that raised at 2026 valuations raise again at or above them. A record half is a statement about how much capital arrived. Whether it was well deployed is a question the next financing round answers, not this report.
